UC Travels To Albania
Field school gives students and scholars opportunity to document ancient remains.
Student's account of May 17 - June 5, 2004 trip
Associate Professor of Anthropology John Johnsen and Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy Thomas Crist took the first group of students to the UC European archaeological field school at Butrint National Park in Butrint, Albania. This ancient city contains the ruins from five different civilizations. Students were busy analyzing human remains that have been previously excavated at this international site. The bones were cataloged when found and then just stored away in closets. No one ever researched them, an intriguing job that the UC team will try to accomplish in the spring of 2005.
"Few American colleges have ever offered a study experience in Albania," Crist says. "It's wonderful that a small school like ours can provide this opportunity to travel to such a historically and culturally significant site."
