Domenica Newell-Amato received her PhD in French Literature from Emory University in Atlanta. She specializes in 17th century French theatre, and in particular, the theatre of Jean Racine. Her research interests include early modern Orientalism, African studies, and postcolonial studies.
Professor Amato has spoken at many national and regional academic conferences, with topics including Caribbean literature, African literature, and 17th century French theatre. She has also given several workshops on innovative uses of technology and multimedia for teaching languages in an all-immersion classroom.
She has published in French Review and International Journal of Health and Communication, as well as various poetry journals. Her documentary on the role of the Arts and Humanities in Medicine is published on the Italian Virtual Class website and in the International Journal of Health and Communication. She recently filmed skits and cultural footage in Italy during the Emory study abroad program which will add to the video components of the Italian Virtual Class classroom, a multimedia website for learning Italian and for which she is a collaborator. She also created an academic documentary called Learning to Speak in Other Cultures.
She loves traveling to Sicily and Paris, and enjoys cooking, painting, and long walks when it’s nice out.
