5 Things to Get Excited About Post-Spring Break

So the semester isn’t over yet? I could’ve sworn it was based on my exhaustion. I totally understand why 93% of the campus is dragging their feet to class this week, but here are some reasons you shouldn’t:

1. It isn’t freezing anymore

Yes, you were so annoyed to be back to the hustle and bustle of the college life after a week of sweet nothings that you completely forgot to notice that the freezing air was no longer hurting your face as you walked to class. Yes, it is pouring rain, but hey, all the more reason to not get ready in the morning am I right?

2. You’re almost there

You’ve managed to survive 10 whole weeks of classes and you only have a measly five more to go. It is the home stretch!

3. Warm weather makes people nicer/happier

People are evidently nicer when the weather is nice. Just a couple more weeks and people will go from darting from building to building, buried in their parkas, avoiding human interaction, mumbling swear words to themselves as icy show whips them in the face to taking leisurely walks, socializing and smiling again. Maybe that’s just me, maybe not.

4. RELAY FOR LIFE

The most fun all-nighter you will ever attempt to pull is less than a month away! On April 8 in the Dome, the UC community is in for a night of music, games and some serious cancer fighting. Last year, Relay For Life raised over $22,000 for the American Cancer Society and it’s looking like we are going raise even more money this year! You really don’t want to miss out on this. Join the fight at relayforlife.org/uticacollegeNY.

5. Moose Madness Weekend

Assuming you’re all going to push-off studying for finals until the night before, you have an amazing Moose Madness weekend to look forward to! Moose Madness begins on the last day of classes and features an annual spring concert, sporting events and other activities. You wouldn’t want to miss that, would you?

Hang in there, folks. It ain’t over till it’s over.

Goodbye Moose-a-Palooza, Hello Moose Madness!

Each spring, the Utica College Programming Board hosts an entire week of events that are totally free for UC students. This week has always been known as Moose-a-Palooza, and in years past, it has often included BBQ food, sunny weather, frisbee and volleyball tournaments, and inflatables in the quad. I look forward to it every year, because it’s a great way to enjoy the spring weather and spend time with other students before the craziness of finals week kicks in!

This year, UCPB revamped Moose-a-Palooza. First, they held a content to rename the week and design the tshirts that would be given out to students. While I was disappointed that my suggestions did not win the contest (C’mon, Trax wearing sunglasses would have made for a great shirt!), I was quite fond of the winning name: Moose Madness!

With a new name came some new programming for the week. I took advantage of as many of the events as my night class and desk duty schedule would allow, and was able to attend an event almost every day of Moose Madness! Here are just some of the things I checked out during the week:

Monday, I scored my free tshirt with the new Moose Madness design and was on a team that won 3rd place in the campus-wide scavenger hunt! Since it was my birthday, our team was named Happy Birthday Elaine. (Side note, my friends rock!)

Tuesday, team Happy Birthday Elaine won 3rd place in Battle of the Decades Trivia in the Pioneer Pub. Hey, at least we are consistent with our 3rd place winnings! 3BL loves trivia, and this event had a fun twist, because it featured questions from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and today!

Wednesday featured the hypnotist Seilesh. I saw him last year when he came to UC, and loved him just as much this time around! He is an amazing entertainer and puts on a hilarious show. It is so funny to see fellow students under hypnosis! I never laugh as hard as when I see a good hypnotist show.

Saturday was the big WPNR and UCPB concert- the Royal Tongues and the X Ambassadors! The show was right in the gym and was totally free for UC students! We had a huge turnout, and students loved the unique sounds of both bands. The musicians were all immensely talented and really did an amazing job performing. I was so grateful to see both bands in person, as it made me appreciate their music a lot more- these guys are the real deal!

Overall, it was a busy week for UCPB and definitely a great time for the UC students who came out and enjoyed all of the events offered on campus. I loved all of the events I attended during Moose Madness and was really grateful to make some awesome memories during my last spring fest at UC!

Moose Madness!

Moose Madness (previously titled, Moose-A-Palooza) was this past week! It’s basically a week long host of events that are free for students! Typically it is the last (or second to last) full week of classes, and ends on the saturday with some big event. Plus! They always have cool tshirts that students can score for free with their student ID!

The big event at the end of this year’s festivities was the much-hyped concert put on by WPNR 90.7 (Utica College’s radio station) as well as the Utica College Programming Board (UCPB.) The performers were the X Ambassadors with the Royal Tongues as their openers. Unfortunately, I had to work an admissions event before the concert, and then had to catch up on school work while it was happening, so I’m super bummed I missed it. I did hear from some people (of the loads that went!) how great of a show it was!

But, Saturday was not the only day of fun. Monday there was a picture scavenger hunt, Tuesday a decades trivia game, on Wednesday they had a hypnotist…and the list goes on! Not only did UCPB put on tons of fun events, multiple other organizations took advantage of the fun-filled week and held their own events as well. Chi Beta Sigma’s airband was held on the Saturday after the concert and it was a great time had by all in attendance. The art gallery also held a scavenger hunt around campus based on tricky clues.

I took part in multiple activities during the week, but I am proud to say that a few friends and I were the winners of the picture scavenger hunt that was held the Monday of Moose Madness. It was a lot of fun running around campus and trying to find the various clues.

Moose Madness in general is just a week long of fun events to help students de-stress and relax a bit before the stress of finals sets in. So, if you didn’t take advantage of all of the free fun this year, be sure to check it out next year! It’s always one of my favorite things about Utica College. (Check out some of my fav pics from the scavenger hunt below!)
