In a time defined by smart phones and video games, it is more important than ever that books stay relevant in the minds of kids. The Laura Dorow Read Again Book Project is making sure that happens.
On June 21, students from Kernan Elementary School lined up, eager to receive bags of books to take back to their class from Kathleen Cullen, assistant professor of education at Utica College and current Read Again project manager. “I really love when we get our new books every year,” said one of the 5th grade students.
For the past 15 years, the Laura Dorow Read Again Book Project has been donating used children’s books to area schools that have a high need for the books. The Read Again Project donates the books before summer and winter breaks so that the kids can have books over these hiatuses from class. These books come from donations to the college from libraries, private donors, and charity organizations.
Kernan Elementary received several hundred books from the project, which were divided by grade level before being distributed to the students.
