UMAIL: Roommate 101

Hi Pioneer,

Living with new people is a fun and unique experience! Here are a few things to keep in mind when getting to know your roommate.

Communication Is Key

Reach out to your roommate before you move in! Using the Room Assignment link to find your roommate’s email address is a great way to start. You can also use social media like Instagram or Facebook. Get to know one another, talk about your living styles, and decide who is bringing what. Remember, compromise is important! Who needs two TVs, anyway?

Here is a list of suggested items to bring with you.

Other People's Differences Are Your Strengths

Everyone is used to living a certain way. Transitioning from your own space at home to living in a shared space is a big adjustment. You may not always be able to blast music at any time, watch TV early in the morning, or leave your clothes all over the floor. It’s important to be considerate of your roommate. Everyone is different. Embrace those differences...who knows, you might even learn something new!

We Are Here For You

Living away from home can be scary. Don’t worry, we are here to help! You will have a Resident Assistant (R.A.) living on your floor with you. This person is trained to create and maintain a friendly, safe environment. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your R.A. with any question or concern, big or small.

Safety First

At Utica, your safety is our priority! There are a few items that are not allowed in the residence halls such as holiday lights, candles or incense, toasters, and alcohol (if under 21). Click here for the full list. Please note that Alumni Hall and Pioneer Village Residents have specific appliance policies. Following these rules ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone!

As a reminder, please visit our Move in Information webpage and our Orientation webpage for more information on move in and orientation!

We can’t wait to see you on campus!

Sincerely,
