UMAIL: Technology on Campus
Welcome to UC from IITS (Integrated Information Technology Services)! Here is some important information about the technology we offer.
Buying a new computer? If you’ll be looking to purchase a new computer please see the “What type of computer should I bring to college” section on our Welcome FAQ for details on recommendations.
About your UC Google account
Access your email and other Google based services at mail.utica.edu. It's important that you check your UC email regularly to make sure you get important information sent to you from campus offices.
You get unlimited storage space on Google Drive! This is a good location to keep backups of critical files. Google Docs also allows you to collaborate with others in real time.
To setup your UC email on your phone use the Gmail app.
When you graduate from UC, you'll be given an option to renew your account. You just have to keep using it, and renew when prompted.
If you leave UC before graduating your account will be removed, but we can let you know how to download all your data before that happens.
- UC Google accounts don't allow financial transactions. This includes purchases made using Google Wallet, paid content from the Google Play Store, and in-app purchases. Please use a separate personal Gmail account for any paid apps or services.
Don't waste your cellular data! Make sure you're on WiFi whenever possible. iPhone users should turn off the WiFi Assist option in the Settings app, under Cellular. WiFi is available in most areas of the campus. For most laptops and phones, login to UC_Secure using your UC username and password. For other devices, register your device after connecting to UC_Wireless. Stop by the Help Desk, Library room L120, if you have any trouble getting connected.
Get Microsoft Office for free! Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is available free from Microsoft while you are a student. See our instructions at utica.edu/msoffice.
In the Residence Halls
More information is available in our Welcome FAQ as well as our main page: iits.utica.edu. If you can't find answers to your questions there, just contact the Help Desk at (315) 792-3115 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
For the benefit of everyone using WiFi in the residence halls, we do not allow you to bring your own wireless router or other network gear. If you need help connecting to WiFi, please visit the Help Desk in the lower level of the Library.
Wireless printers can be used with a USB cable, but not over WiFi. All printer wireless features must be off to avoid problems. You don't need a printer at all. Save some money, and use the printing provided in the computer labs and library.
Cable TV is available. You'll need a TV that has a built in digital QAM tuner. This is standard on most TVs, but check the specs on your TV before you pack just to be sure. Visit utica.edu/cable for more information. Bring your own coaxial cable to connect from your TV to the wall. If you only plan to use your TV for apps such as Netflix or Hulu, you simply need to register the TV for Internet access when you get to campus.
You'll find that Chromecast and Google Home devices are NOT compatible with our network at this time, so please leave those at home. This is usually true of smart home type devices such as WiFi plugs and light bulbs. Some devices, such as Apple TV may have limited functionality. TVs and many other devices capable of using the Internet do work on campus, but must be registered in our network to get access. Check our Networking Page for our prohibited and supported devices list, and how to register special devices on campus.
Modern game consoles are compatible with our network! Some older devices may not work, see our Networking Page for supported devices and how to register them on campus
Have a great day!
