Utica, NY (04/18/2006) - Students and teachers will attend the Utica College Education Showcase, but this time it is the teachers that will be learning. This annual event is an opportunity for area educators and community members to see the research work of Utica College graduate and undergraduate education students.

The Education Showcase is Thursday, April 20 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Library Concourse at the college. It is free and open to the public. Utica College students will present research and curriculum projects including displays of teaching portfolios, children’s math problem-solving kits, independent learning centers and school investigations. Students will also give presentations about cognitive theories, working with students of all abilities, and field-related studies.

According to Dr. Alicja Rieger, assistant professor of education and showcase coordinator since 1999, the Education Showcase offers students an open forum to share projects and connect with Mohawk Valley educators for future employment. “Our reputation for a strong education program is greatly reinforced by the showcase,” she said.

This is a unique opportunity for local school administrators to meet Utica College student candidates for teaching positions. The Utica College education department places students in teaching internships at 34 school districts, giving them the opportunity to work with any grade level, from pre-school through high school.
Parents, grandparents and other guests can learn about the more challenging expectations facing today’s teacher. “Teachers are no longer isolated. They must be flexible, demonstrate competencies in many content areas and must collaborate with others,” Rieger said.

For more information regarding the Education Showcase or Utica College’s education program, please contact Alicja Rieger at 792-3721 or arieger@utica.edu.
