Utica, NY (03/22/2006) - In today’s political climate, the freedoms of privacy and dissent are more than constitutional rights; they have become highly debated topics.

Former Congressman Bob Barr will speak on “The Limits of Dissent,” Tuesday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Strebel Auditorium at Utica College. The event is free and open to the public.

Barr, a Republican who represented the 7th District of Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003, has been vocal about his opposition to many of the provisions of the Patriot Act. He is a staunch defender of privacy, consults with clients such as the ACLU on issues of privacy, and speaks to local and national groups. A board member of the National Rifle Association, Barr is an advocate of the right to bear arms.

A frequent contributor for CNN, Barr is the author of “The Meaning of Is, the Squandered Impeachment and Wasted Legacy of William Jefferson Clinton.” He serves on the legal advisory board for the Southeastern Legal Foundation; he is a columnist for the “Atlanta Journal Constitution,” a contributing editor for “The American Spectator,” and host of a nationally syndicated radio show on Radio America titled “Bob Barr’s Laws of the Universe.”

While serving as a representative of Georgia, he was a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, vice chairman of the Government Reform Committee, and a member of the Committee on Financial Services. He was also a member of the CIA from 1971-1978, and a practicing lawyer for many years.

Barr earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California; a master’s in international affairs from George Washington University; and a juris doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Barr’s lecture is part of a series of events celebrating Utica College’s campus theme for the academic year, “Dissent in a Free Society.”
