NASA Astronaut to Visit UC Regional Science Fair
Nearly 50 Students from Local Junior-Senior High Schools to Participate

Utica, NY (03/21/2006) - NASA astronaut Capt. Lee M. E. Morin will join U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert in welcoming and congratulating participants in the 28th Annual Utica College Regional Science Fair presented by Homogeneous Metals on Saturday (March 25) in the Library Concourse at Utica College.Currently the deputy assistant secretary for science at the State Department in Washington, Morin has logged over 259 hours in space. His love of both science and education make him an ideal guest for this year’s fair, said Lawrence Aaronson, Ph.D., professor of biology and dean of arts and sciences at UC.
Morin has earned a master’s of public health degree, a doctorate in microbiology, a medical doctorate, and a master’s of biochemistry degree. Morin began his career with NASA in 1996, and served on a shuttle mission to the International Space Station. A flight surgeon/diving medical officer, he was called to active duty in Bahrain during Operation Desert Storm and the post-war building period.
Nearly 50 students from nine area junior-senior high schools will showcase projects ranging from “Effects of Mouthwashes on Growth of Candida albicans” to “Bending Light with Sugar.” The projects, in the areas of physical science, natural science, and math/computer engineering, are divided into junior and senior divisions for judging.
Boehlert, a 1961 graduate of Utica College and chair of the House Science Committee since 2001, has been a longtime supporter of the college’s science fair.
The public is invited to view student exhibits from 2 until 3 p.m. The fair will conclude with an awards banquet in the evening.
