Utica, NY (02/21/2006) - The Womyn’s Resource Center of Utica College will host a special luncheon to kick off Womyn’s Herstory Month. “In Celebration of Women” will be held on Thursday, March 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Library Concourse.
Guest speakers at the luncheon will be Mary Cater and Beth LeGere, a mother-and-daughter duo who champion women’s rights and are community activists. They will speak on “Our History, Our Strength: Making a Change One Step at a Time,” addressing how people learn from each other across generations, and how they can use what they learn to make a difference in our communities.
Reservations are required for this event, and should be made by Friday, Feb. 24. The cost is $12 per person. For more information, contact UC’s office of student affairs at (315) 792-3100.
The theme of this year’s Womyn’s Herstory Month is “Women: Builders of Communities and Dreams.” Womyn’s Herstory Month is sponsored by the Womyn’s Resource Center and the Womyn’s Herstory Month Committee. The Womyn’s Resource Center was established at the college to promote empowerment and growth of women through education and mutual support. The center addresses a wide range of issues affecting women of all ages, ethnicities, religious beliefs and lifestyles. The alternative spelling of “womyn” is not meant to exclude men, but rather to emphasize women’s distinct identity.
Other events planned for Womyn’s Herstory Month include a women’s “know-how” series, a women’s history jeopardy contest, a lecture on human trafficking, the annual Womyn’s Resource Center Awards and Pub Night, and a bus trip to local historical sites. Further information regarding Womyn’s Herstory Month events is available through the Womyn’s Resource Center at (315) 792-3327.
