Utica, NY (12/01/2005) - Unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. The seven principles of Kwanzaa will be celebrated at Utica College on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3 during the sixteenth annual Kwanzaa celebration.

A Celestial Celebration will take place Friday at 7 p.m. in Strebel Auditorium. This cultural talent show will kick off the weekend with various performances that celebrate the Kwanzaa holiday.

On Saturday, the celebration will continue with a Kwanzaa semi-formal. The event will feature a dinner by Nana's Girls Catering Services. Festivities will begin at 7 p.m. in the Library Concourse and are open to all students and members of the college community. This year's keynote speaker will be Shakur Afrikanus, a leading Afrocentrist theorist and researcher who has fifteen years of experience working with children and youth.

Both events during the weekend are sponsored by the Utica College Black Student Union.

Kwanzaa is a non-religious African American holiday that celebrates family, community and culture. Created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of black studies at California State University, Long Beach, in 1966, the holiday is celebrated for seven days: Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. At Utica College, the celebration is traditionally held at the beginning of December before students leave campus for winter break.
