Utica, NY (09/01/2015) - Utica College’s Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery will showcase selections from the Eleanor and Roger Baker Collection beginning Friday, Sept. 4. Focused on the Gold Coast of West Africa, the exhibition presents cultural objects of the Asante people and neighboring cultures that highlight the Asante tribe’s visual language of Adinkra.

Adinkra is the Asante symbolic visual language designed to hold and communicate knowledge, meaning and understanding. Adinkra began as a visual language in the 19th century by the Asante of the Akan, in the Gold Coast of West Africa, before British colonization.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 4 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Library Concourse. Members of the gallery staff will be on hand to answer questions about these exciting pieces of African history. The reception is free and open to the public.

The Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery, located on the lower level of Gannett Library, is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The exhibit will close on Friday, Oct. 9.
