Utica, NY (08/27/2015) - This year’s convocation at Utica College will be unlike any other, as a record-breaking 650 new freshman will be welcomed to campus.

“This is the largest freshman class in our history and one of the most talented,” said Todd S. Hutton, president of Utica College.

On Friday, August 28, new students and their families will arrive at the North and South Residence Halls for Move-In Day between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. A welcome picnic behind the Ralph F. Strebel Student Center will immediately follow. Convocation for the incoming class will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Harold T. Clark Jr. Athletic Center.

Brian D. Agnew, a 2003 graduate of UC, will give the keynote address at Convocation. Agnew went on to earn a Ph.D. and is now the senior vice president and corporate chief development officer for the Robert Wood Johnson Health System.

The college is also expecting more than 150 transfer students.

Convocation is a formal ceremony for incoming students that marks the beginning of their academic careers at Utica College. The tolling of the bell atop Bell Hall, a gift from alumnus Randy Huta, associate professor emeritus of accounting, and his wife Carol, is a Utica College tradition that signals the beginning of the academic year.

This fall, many new majors will be offered on campus including Wellness and Adventure Education, Psychobiology, Animal Behavior and Neuroscience. In addition, the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Dome and the college's new Welcome Center are expected to be completed. Classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 31.
