Utica, NY (04/30/2015) - Dr. Judith Kirkpatrick, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Utica College, is pleased to announce that Pamela Matt will be the new executive director of the college’s Young Scholars LPP.

Matt, an attorney who will leave her position as executive director of the Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce next month, earned a law degree from Duquesne University School of Law. At the chamber, Matt achieved a 50 percent growth in membership and created the Catalyst group of young professionals. She will replace Flossie Mitchell, who will retire in June.

Matt has served as director of Human Resources at Mohawk  LTD. and as a leadership gifts officer at Colgate University. She has also been a longtime volunteer leader for the Rotary Club of Utica.

The Young Scholars LPP, launched in 1993, is a collaborative project between Utica College and the Utica City School District.  The multi-year program is designed by school district and college officials to meet the challenge of motivating teenage students to stay in school, earn a New York State Regents Diploma with the Advanced Designation, and pursue post-secondary education.

Utica City School District teachers nominate sixth-grade students who are identified as possessing the potential for success in secondary and post-secondary school, but who may not achieve their full potential due to various social and economic risk factors.  Each year, the Young Scholars LPP provides services to more than 300 students in grades seven through 12.

Young Scholars provides academic support to the students, including tutoring and special review sessions, counseling, summer programs, enrichment activities, career exploration, mentoring, community service and much more.

Now in its twenty-second year, the program has served more than 1,000 students, with a 93 percent overall graduation rate. Of those, 87 percent have earned a Regents or Advanced Regents diploma. Since 2005, 86 percent have enrolled in college, graduating from colleges including Cornell, Hamilton, FIT, Harvard, MIT, NYU, Russell Sage, University of Rochester Medical School, Vassar, Yale, and Utica College.
