Utica, NY (02/11/2015) - On Monday, Feb. 16, Brian Panama, Ph.D., research scientist of experimental cardiology at the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory, will present a lecture on the “Role of the IRX5 Transcription Factor Gene in Sudden Cardiac Death,” as part of Utica College’s Spring Asa Gray Cultural Events Series.

More than 300,000 deaths each year in the United States are linked to sudden cardiac death (SCD) caused by arrhythmia, an abnormal heart rhythm. Panama will discuss the Iroquois homeobox-gene-5 (IRX5) transcription factor that is a particularly attractive candidate for inherited SCD syndromes.

Panama received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biochemistry from the University of California, and his doctorate and post-doctorate degrees in physiology from the University of Michigan and the University of Toronto.

Throughout his career, he has contributed to several professional publications and in 2012, received the First Place Gordon Moe Young Investigator Award at the Upstate New York Cardiac Electrophysiological Society Annual Meeting.
The Asa Gray seminar Series is sponsored by the Asa Gray Biological Society and is the longest running series at Utica College.

This event is free and open to the public. The lecture will take place at 4 p.m. in the Donohue Auditorium in the Gordon Science Center.
