Utica, NY (01/08/2015) - Utica College, a leading provider of higher education that recently opened its first learning center in St. Petersburg, today announced that students enrolled in its Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program have begun their clinical rotations at St. Anthony’s Hospital, part of the BayCare Health System.

BayCare is the largest not-for-profit medical care provider in the Tampa Bay area. Utica College ABSN students will gain valuable hands-on clinical experience working with patients and health care providers as they move through their 16 month program, which will earn them a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and prepare them to immediately enter the ranks of the region’s high-skilled nursing workforce.

"BayCare's ongoing commitment to preparing nursing students to handle the diverse needs of their patients with confidence and compassion means that our graduates will have the best hands on experience, leadership and clinical skills to excel anywhere their job search takes them," said Dr. Todd S. Hutton, president of Utica College. "We are confident that their experience at BayCare hospitals coupled with the excellent training and instruction from Utica College’s nurse educators will help them become valuable, sought-after health care professionals.”

Clinicals are the nursing equivalent of internships and residencies for doctors, and they are a critical part of medical training as it gives nurses a chance to work with instructors who are ready to step in and assist as needed, before they are required to be on their own.

BayCare has enjoyed a long history as a principal clinical site of choice for nursing students.  At BayCare hospitals such as St. Anthony’s, Utica College nursing students will observe and experience patient care delivery in a comprehensive healthcare center that offers state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and research facilities, and an environment based on a team approach.

The St. Petersburg accelerated nursing program is currently accepting applications. For more information on Utica College’s accelerated nursing program, visit acceleratednursing.utica.edu/florida or call 866-890-9340.

About the program – Utica College’s accelerated nursing program offers students the opportunity to finish nursing school in just 16 months. It balances online courses with hands-on clinical rotations throughout the Tampa Bay region. The simulation lab in St. Petersburg features the same medical technology used at hospitals and other health care settings. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.  It is also approved by the Florida Commission for Independent Education.
