Utica, NY (12/15/2014) - Utica College will honor the Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) of Rome for its commitment to employee education and the economic development of the Mohawk Valley.

Recently, Utica College and DFAS partnered to launch a unique on-site master’s program for DFAS employees in order to improve their level of personal and professional education.

There will be a reception and dinner at the college this evening.

An integral part of the Mohawk Valley's economic development and prosperity since 1995, the Rome DFAS employs more than 1200 people, providing accounting and finance support to the U.S. Army.

Utica College faculty members were able to build upon the core of the traditional MBA program, making it more applied and integrated in ways that DFAS managers will use in the workplace. General academic finance and accounting courses, for example, were combined to create a hybrid financial fluency course. Through this structured program, managers will be better able to plan strategically and make decisions while guiding their employees.

“There are many advantages to a partnership like this,” said Stephanie Nesbitt, director of the MBA and risk management assurance programs. “The program can be tailored to the needs of a specific business, and employees develop a real camaraderie by taking classes together.”

Nesbitt says the 18 DFAS students in the first specialized MBA cohort are excited, interested and engaged.

“We encourage partnerships like this between the college and Mohawk Valley businesses because they benefit everyone,” James Norrie, dean of the School of Business and Justice Studies, said. “With our MBA programs and engaged business faculty, Utica College is in a unique position to provide this kind of support to local, regional and national employers.”
