Utica, NY (12/11/2014) - As time passes, the artifacts and possessions of previous generations can slip away. To help preserve these pieces of history in a technological world, the Utica College Center for Historical Research has embarked on The Digital History Project. The goal of the project is to collect and curate a digital archive of the people of the Mohawk Valley.

A wide range of submissions will be accepted, including diaries and letters, photographs, deeds, military papers—any documents—and even artifacts such as paintings, tools or clothing. All submissions will be returned to the owner once they have been digitally entered into the collection. According to Dr. David Wittner, professor of history and director of the center, there is one simple reason for collecting these artifacts. “The people of the Mohawk Valley are its history,” Wittner says.

All items will be returned to the owners once cataloging is completed and contributors will receive digital copies as well. If you have questions or would like to schedule a time for pick up or drop off, please contact Wittner at (315) 792-3332, the Center for Historical Research at (315) 792-3756 or by email at chr@utica.edu. With no end date in sight, Wittner hopes to make this a continuing effort, as each new day makes history of the day before.

Founded in 2000, Utica College’s Center for Historical Research provides resources and assistance to students, faculty, researchers, and members of the community who are working on local and global history projects. The Center also sponsors a variety of history-related events in conjunction with the Department of History such as UC’s Brown Bag Talks, History Month events, and commemorative “@” series.
