Utica, NY (09/15/2014) - Donna Vogler, Ph.D., associate professor and department chair of biology at SUNY Oneonta, will give her seminar “Planes, Plains and Food Chains – Bottom Up Management of Airport Ecosystems,” on Monday, Sept. 15.The ecosystems surrounding airports can encompass grassland, wetlands and more that can be attractive to wildlife. Minimizing the threat to aviation that wildlife poses requires management of the vegetation surrounding the airfield. Vogler will explore the finding of a project supported by the Federal Aviation Administration to evaluate whether native plants or conventional turf mix were more successful at deterring wildlife from encroaching on the airfield. The project examined three sites in Central New York including Griffiss International Airport in Rome.
Vogler earned a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University, a master’s degree from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in Botany from Penn State University. Her research focuses on invasive plant species and vegetation management at regional airports to reduce wildlife hazards.
The lecture will take place at 4 p.m. in Donahue Auditorium in UC’s Gordon Science Center. A reception will be held immediately afterwards. The lecture is free and open to the public.
