OT Grads Earn 100% Pass Rate on Licensing Exams

Class of 2013 All Pass National Certification Exam

Utica, NY (07/16/2014) - Utica College’s master’s in occupational therapy class of 2013 achieved a major milestone, with 100 percent of the class passing the national certification examination for occupational therapists.

The examination, administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), is based on current standards that provide reliable indicators of competence in the practice for occupational therapy.

Graduates of the program are eligible to apply and sit for the national certification examination for occupational therapists administered by NBCOT. Utica College’s graduates go on to work in a variety of health care settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, nursing homes and community programs and private practice.

Occupational therapy practitioners help individuals to participate in the meaningful activities of daily life by using occupations as the means and the goal of intervention. Those areas of occupation include activities of daily living, work, play, education, social participation, instrumental activities of daily living and leisure.

“Our success is a direct result of the enthusiasm of our faculty, the strength of our curriculum and the dedication of the students who chose Utica College for their occupational therapy education,” said Dr. Nancy Hollins, OTR/L, professor and chair of the OT department. “In addition, our collaborative community alliances enable faculty and staff to meet the needs of society while promoting critical thinking, clinical reasoning and skill development.”

Building on a liberal arts foundation, the mission of UC’s graduate program in occupational therapy is to facilitate the transformation of students into autonomous thinkers and community leaders prepared to practice occupational therapy. The program, started at Utica College in 1966, is approved by the New York State Education Department and fully accredited through the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
