Utica, NY (03/04/2014) - On Thursday, March 6, Film@UC will present the 2013 Russian documentary “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer” as part of Utica College’s Cultural Events series.

The HBO documentary film, produced and directed by Maxim Pozdorokin and Mike Lerner, shows the truth behind the Russian judicial system and acts of protest, such as the Pussy Riot, a combination of an anonymous oppositional art and punk band in Moscow.

Truth and reality is unveiled as the documentary follows the accusation, trial and sentencing of three girls, Nadia, Masha and Katia, who in November of 2012, put on colorful ski masks and attended the “punk prayer protest” on the altar of Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.

The riot lasted only 40 seconds and they were arrested for trespassing, wearing inappropriate sleeveless dresses and disruption of social order. During that time, several celebrities, including Madonna, Yoko Ono, Sting and Paul McCartney supported the girls and spoke up on freedom of speech.

“Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer” was an official selection of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Punk Spirit.

This film is free and open to the public, and will be shown in the Macfarlane Auditorium in the college’s DePerno Hall at 7 p.m. For more information, call (315) 792-3047 or visit utica.edu/culture.
