Utica, NY (11/26/2013) - On Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 12:30 p.m. in the DuRoss Faculty Dining Room, the History Brown Bag Lunch lecture series features Syracuse University doctoral candidate Robert Clines and his lecture titled, “The Society of Jesus Between Rome and the Christian Orient.”

Between 1560 and 1585, the Society of Jesus carried out three missions to the Christian communities of the Ottoman Empire in an attempt to unite Eastern Christians and the Catholic Church under the authority of the papacy. Each of these three missions had their own set of problems, including the interference of Jews and Muslims, and the high rates of illiteracy in the Christians of Lebanon.

This presentation links these three missions, demonstrates that the Jesuits had to navigate both the unique currents of life on the individual missions as well as the pressures Rome placed on the Jesuits to succeed.

The History Brown Bag Lunch lecture holds talks on the second Wednesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters. The lecture is free and open to the public.

For more information on the History Brown Bag Lunch lecture, contact David Wittner, professor of history, at dwittne@utica.edu.
