Asa Gray Presents Talk on West Nile Virus

Utica, NY (10/07/2013) - Greta van Slyke, a 2000 graduate of Utica College and current research scientist at the New York State Department of Health, will give a seminar on “West Nile Virus: Looking Beyond the Consensus” on Monday, Oct. 7.

Van Slyke will discuss her studies that focus on the contribution of the West Nile Virus (WNV) mutant swarm to overall viral fitness, specifically in the mosquito vector, and the complex genomic and adaptive mechanisms that render WNV a unique ribonucleic acid virus possessing a superior ability to infect and replicate in almost any host it encounters, regardless of environmental factors.

The seminar will take place at 4 p.m. in Utica College’s Gordon Science Center, in Donahue Auditorium. A reception will follow immediately after the seminar outside of Gordon Science Center. It is free and open to the public.

The Asa Gray Seminar Series is sponsored by the Asa Gray Biological Society and is the longest running seminar series at UC. Scientists are invited from throughout the region to present seminars on their ongoing research.
