Utica, NY (09/12/2013) - Utica College has announced formation of its new Northeast Cyber Forensics Center (NCFC), a laboratory that provides criminal forensic investigation of digital evidence for local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as other private and public sector entities.“Today, nearly every crime or investigation has a digital component,” said Anthony Martino, director of the NCFC. “Phone records, emails, online browsing history, text messages, pictures and more can be analyzed to aid in an investigation.”
Currently, the NCFC collaborates with local and regional law enforcement on forensic cases, and provides private digital forensics services to businesses, corporations and law firms, with the use of high-tech computers and sophisticated software in the laboratory.
In addition to private forensics services, the NCFC features other areas of specialty, including training, law enforcement collaboration, small business incubation, research and development and forensic tool evaluation.
The location of the Center, in the Economic Crime, Justice Studies and Cybersecurity building on the UC campus, presents several opportunities for the students at UC. Students are encouraged to apply for internship and assistant positions offered by the NCFC, where they gain valuable work experience examining pieces of digital evidence and working on cyber forensics cases. The NCFC lab is also accessible for students working on special projects under the supervision of laboratory staff.
Future initiatives for the NCFC include training sessions to help law enforcement and IT professionals properly collect digital evidence, as well as small business incubation, to help innovators and entrepreneurs incubate ideas that can positively impact the local economy.
“The NCFC’s functional crime laboratory offers cost effective and high quality cyber forensics services to law enforcement, as well as the private sector,” said Martino. “Our location allows for a faster turn-around time, particularly for cases in our region.”
The NCFC will complement Utica College's internationally respected suite of economic crime and justice studies programs, taught by a remarkably accomplished professional faculty, using the industry's most current tools and techniques. Utica College is also home to the Economic Crime Institute, and the Center for Identity Management and Information Protection (CIMIP).
