UC Hosts History Project Symposium

"Upstate Frontiers" to be Showcased

Utica, NY (04/19/2013) - Utica College will host its 14th Annual History Project Symposium Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. in the Carbone Family Auditorium in the Economic Crime and Justice Studies and Cybersecurity Building.

Papers to be presented include I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter™: New York’s War on Imitation Butter; Missionaries, Methods and the New York Frontier; Black Civil Rights Organization in Utica; and On the Banks of a Nation: Utica and the Erie Canal.

Utica College's History Project allows history majors the chance to perform original research and gives students the opportunity to have their findings published in a journal. Students begin their project journeys with a historical methods course which is designed to train students in locating and evaluating sources, organizing and writing scholarly papers and reviewing works written by significant historians of the past. While enrolled in this course, the professor identifies a theme in which students can then select and research a related topic. Over the next year students culminate their research findings into a 20- to 30-page paper. Students are introduced to the publishing aspect of the project as well, learning software programs such as Quark Express, PageMaker and using and learning editing techniques. Completed papers are then blind reviewed by a faculty committee which selects the best papers for The History Project Symposium.

Published journals are distributed to Utica College's Library, the Utica Public Library, Oneida County Historical Society, and 27 high school libraries in Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison counties. Journals are also available for purchase. Requests for a copy of the journal can be submitted to Mary Dobek, administrative secretary for the school of arts and sciences, at mfdobek@utica.edu and order forms can be downloaded and printed at www.utica.edu/history.
