ECI, CJ Career Day for High School Students

Area Juniors, Seniors Come to Campus Nov. 7

Utica, NY (10/30/2012) - What’s it like to be a criminal investigator? Utica College will present its first Criminal Justice and Economic Crime Investigation Career Day on Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the Economic Crime, Justice Studies and Cybersecurity building on the UC campus.

The career day is open to 90 high school junior and seniors who are college-bound with solid skills in math, science and writing who may be interested in a Criminal Justice and/or Economic Crime Investigation career path.

Utica College’s premiere Criminal Justice and Economic Crime Investigation faculty and its industry partners have teamed up to provide an exciting day for students to explore and learn about the many career opportunities available right here in the Mohawk Valley and elsewhere.

The students will enjoy a continental breakfast followed by an informational session lead by a professional panel explaining what Criminal Justice and Economic Crime Investigation actually is. Students will participate in an Economic Crime Investigation presentation followed by their choice of interactive Criminal Justice presentations.

Assistant District Attorney Bernard L. Hyman will demonstrate the Economic Crime Investigation session which will showcase how current technology and link analysis software assists law enforcement to catch the most sophisticated thieves. Economic crime costs billions of dollars every year and Utica College is training students to be technologically savvy enough to catch those who think they will never be caught.

The criminal justice sessions will involve investigating undocumented human remains and the creation of crime scene mapping which shows how modern forensics can help solve mysteries of our past.

“This special event will teach potential students about the popular criminal justice program, as well as exploring the various career options in finance, banking and related fields in Economic Crime Investigation,” said Patricia Swann, dean of the School of Business and Justice Studies.

Representatives including New Hartford Police Sergeant Robert Philo will be joining the students to bring some real life experience to the event.
