Anything but "Monkey Business" at Utica College


First Asa Gray Seminar of the Fall Semester

A research microbiologist will discuss evolution and treatment of the monkeypox virus.

Utica, NY (09/07/2012) - The first Asa Gray seminar of the semester will highlight the monkeypox virus, its evolution and strategies to combat it.

The seminar will take place Monday, Sept. 10, in Donahue Auditorium, Gordon Science Center at Utica College.

Dr. Sara Johnston, research microbiologist, U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases - Virology Division, will discuss the recent work on the development of new and more effective treatment alternatives for the monkeypox virus. A rare viral disease occurring mostly in central and western Africa, monkeypox belongs to a family of viruses that includes smallpox.

Asa Gray, the longest running seminar series at Utica College, is sponsored by the Asa Gray Biological Society. Scientists from throughout the region are invited to present on their ongoing research.

There will be a reception following the presentation.
