English and Eels: Nexus Kicks Off for Semester

Utica, NY (09/06/2012) - The Utica College faculty will host the first Nexus seminar of the semester Friday, Sept. 7 at 2:30 p.m. in the Willard Conference room in Deperno Hall.Jason R. Denman, associate professor of English, will discuss “Why the hell would an English Ph.D. spend two days researching eels? Tangential Approaches to Seventeenth-Century Drama.”
The seminar provides a ground-level view of research methods in early modern drama, with an eye to the quirky ways that research actually happens. Denman will show what original copies of early plays actually look like and will also discuss the difficulties of constructing literary genealogies. He will explore the ways that plays are connected across the gap in the middle of the seventeenth century—the English Civil Wars that closed the theaters from 1642 to 1660.
The Nexus seminars give faculty the opportunity to discuss their research interests and scholarly pursuits. Participants are able to explore new findings and viewpoints and share ideas with faculty, students, and the local community.
