UC's Tim Nelson Named to National Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Former Men's Coach Holds Many Records

Utica, NY (05/25/2012) - Former Utica College men's lacrosse coach and current Assistant Vice President of Advancement Tim Nelson was selected for induction into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Nelson, who still holds the NCAA Division I record for assists in a career (221), is one of eight selections for the 2012 induction class formally announced by U.S. Lacrosse on Wednesday, May 23. This year's class will be officially inducted in a ceremony Saturday, October 20, at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Md.

After spending one season at North Carolina State in 1982, Nelson transferred to Syracuse University in 1983 where he began his ascent towards the top of the SU record books.  In just three seasons with the Orange, Nelson was able to make a name for himself by breaking records for most assists in a game (9), season (67 in 1984) and career (187). He also ranks fifth on SU's all-time scoring list with 271 points (84 goals, 187 assists).

Nelson, who was the first three-time winner of the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award (nation's top attackman), finished his college career as the NCAA's all-time scoring leader with 320 points (99 goals, 221 assists). He was one of four Orange lacrosse players selected by a panel of lacrosse coaches, including Brad Kotz as well as Paul and Gary Gait, to the NCAA Lacrosse Committee's 25th Anniversary Lacrosse Team.

As a three-time first-team All-American selection, he helped lead the most storied men's lacrosse program in history to its first national championship in 1983 and two more national championship appearances in 1984 and 1985.

After an illustrious career on the playing field Nelson joined the coaching ranks at the collegiate level, heading the men's lacrosse programs at Dartmouth from 1989 to 1998 and Utica College from 1999 to 2005.

Nelson accepted the job at Utica after nine years at Dartmouth and was charged with starting the Pioneer men's lacrosse program from the ground up.  In six full seasons at the helm he won 38 games and to this day he is tied with current UC Head Coach Mike Parnell for the most wins in a single season (eight), which he accomplished in 2003 and 2004.

He also held assistant coaching positions at Nazareth College (1998-1999), the University of North Carolina (1987-89), and Syracuse (1985-1987).

During his high school playing days at Yorktown Nelson was a two-time All-American in lacrosse, an All-State basketball player and an All-League quarterback for the football team.

He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in higher education administration from Syracuse University.  He currently resides in New Hartford with his wife Jennifer, son Connor and daughter Katie.
