Utica, NY (03/21/2012) - Pablo Picasso and George Braque, along with fellow artist Juan Gris, pioneered collage as a legitimate artistic medium 100 years ago.

In celebration of this anniversary, the Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery at Utica College will host a collage exhibit from March 26 to April 30.

An opening reception will take place on Monday, March 26, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The exhibit, “The End is Near: An International Collage Exhibit,” will feature 10 artists, including prominent collage artists from across the globe such as Pierre Jean Varet, Dale Copeland, Sylvia Netcheva and Aprile Elcich.

The exhibit will also feature renowned American collage artist Jonathan Talbot, whose work has been exhibited at The National Academy and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Talbot, author of the book “Collage: A New Approach,” has represented the U.S. overseas in exhibitions sponsored by the State Department and the Smithsonian Institute.

Other American artists in the exhibit are Kevin Gilmore, Rhode Island and Deborah Snider, Utah, while local artists Julie Takacs and Frank Viola of Utica, and Steven Specht of New Hartford, will also participate.

Specht, Utica College professor of psychology and signature member of the National Collage Society, is a curator of the exhibit with Carolynne Whitefeather, director of the gallery.
Specht’s collages have been featured in several galleries such as the National Collage Society’s (NCS) 27th annual juried exhibit and the Tech Garden’s exhibit in Syracuse.

Specht, Viola and Talbot will be available as a panel to answer questions from exhibit-goers as part of the reception on March 26.

The art of collage has become vibrant in the U.S. The NCS, based in Hudson, Ohio, boasts over 400 members who contribute their work and help this form of art to grow internationally.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.
