Utica, NY (03/06/2012) - Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, author, international lecturer and professor, will speak at Utica College on Tuesday, March 20 at 4 p.m. in DePerno Hall’s Macfarlane Auditorium.

His speech, "Haiti at the Crossroads: Cultural Constructions in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries,” will detail the creation and cultural history of Haiti and what it will take to transform the nation into a democratic state.

Bellegarde-Smith, a Utica College alumnus, has edited or co-edited several books on Haiti and its culture. Such works include Haitian Vodou: Spirit, Myth, and Reality (2006), and Vodou in Haitian Life and Culture: Invisible Powers (2006). Bellegarde-Smith's Haiti: The Breached Citadel (2004), and In the Shadow of Powers: Dantes Bellegarde in Haitian Social Thought (1985), remain important works for those seeking a sophisticated analysis of Haitian history, economics, politics and culture.

He has lectured broadly at universities in the U.S., Brazil, Cuba, France and the United Kingdom. He has also appeared on a number of media outlets including Radio Television Francaise, CNN International, National Public Radio and Al Jazeera.

He is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he is affiliated with the department of Africology. Presently, his research focuses on Latin American and Caribbean cultures, especially Haitian culture, history, and voodoo.

Bellegarde-Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in political science at Utica College in 1968, a master’s in Latin American studies from American University in 1970, and a Ph.D. in international studies in 1977, also from American University.
