Utica, NY (02/14/2012) - Utica College has not only hosted America’s Greatest Heart Run and Walk for 15 years, but faculty, staff and students have put their hearts into it.The Heart Run and Walk, an annual event that raises money to fund research for heart disease and stroke, holds special meaning for those affected by heart disease. Team UC will participate this year in memory of Francis Giacovelli, the father of Fran Lucia, activities advisor/events coordinator at the college.
UC has named Charleen Sagiacomo, Sarah Elleman, Rebecca Sullivan and Stephanie Weishaupt as the team captains for the 2012 Heart Run and Walk.
The captains invite the UC community to get involved and support the efforts of all the volunteers for this year’s event. A number of events on campus will provide the campus community the chance to lend a hand and raise money for the American Heart Association.
They will bring Dakota Schaaf, a licensed cosmetologist, to give red hair extensions for $4. A portion of the money will be donated to Team UC. Schaaf will be in Strebel Student Center Auditorium on Feb. 27 and 28 from 12 to 2 p.m. and on Thursday, March 1 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Weekdays from Feb. 20 to March 2, student volunteers will be outside the Dining Commons in Strebel selling long sleeve t-shirts for $5, hearts for $1 and raffle tickets. Raffle tickets will be $1 per ticket, $2 for three tickets and $5 for an arm’s length of tickets. Heart Run and Walk Registration tickets will be available at this event. Winners will be drawn on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m. on the Strebel Lobby Stage. Prizes include a dinner for two with Sodexo’s Chef Art, a basket full of prizes and two North Face fleece pullovers, donated by Tim Nelson, UC’s assistant vice president for advancement, and Schuss Ski & Bike.
UC professors and staff will sacrifice a bit of their dignity once again to support a favorite fundraising event among students. The “Pie Your Professor or Staff Member in the Face” will take place on Feb. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the dining commons. Pies can be thrown with a $1 donation.
Anyone who would like to volunteer for Team UC can contact Sangiacomo, team UC volunteer coordinator, at 223-2555.
