Utica, NY (10/24/2011) - Utica College’s newest classroom, a high-tech investment and trading laboratory with many of the same elements found in large financial service firms, was dedicated today (Oct. 24).The First Source Federal Credit Union Trading Room will host various classes from the accounting, economics, management, business economics, risk management and insurance programs. The business program’s Herman Crown Investment Fund, a real portfolio of common stock investments managed by students, will also use the classroom.
The state-of-the-art learning center features curved-glass floor-to-ceiling exterior walls, dual-screen computer workstations with specialized financial and investment software, video walls, and smart boards that will allow professors to display real-time stock data, videos, and other financial information. Surrounding the room is a 65-foot long, real-time stock ticker that runs up-to-the-minute stock data in full color.
The trading room is the first of its kind in this area, and will provide a unique experience for the future investors and economists it will serve.
“The idea behind the trading room is to provide an environment that students are going to be facing when they go into the real world,” said Rick Fenner, associate professor and chair of economics.
According to Pat Swann, dean of the school of business and justice studies, the First Source FCU Trading Room will be “open for business” as soon as faculty are completely trained on the technology that will be used in the classroom.
