Utica, NY (10/05/2011) - Utica College will honor the National Day on Writing by hosting a special event in the Pioneer Pub on Thursday, Oct. 20 from 3 to 6 p.m.Members of the UC community can go to the pub and participate in the open mic. Poems, short stories, news stories, even news releases can be read at the event. Then, those who attend will have the chance to add a line to the college’s scroll poem, a poem that has a beginning but each person that wants to can add a line.
Mary Ann Janda professor of English, director of the Mohawk Valley Writing Project and the UC Writing Center, said that this is a chance for everyone on the campus to come together and honor the day.
“It's a celebration of writing,” Janda said. “It's a day of celebrating and writing at Utica College with students and colleagues. The scroll poem is something that everyone can add to.”
Writing by UC faculty, staff and students can be submitted for publication on the National Gallery of Writing at http://galleryofwriting.org/ Utica College has its own page of which Janda is the curator. After she reviews each piece, she will post it to the national website.
“All kinds of writing are welcome,” Janda said.
The National Day on Writing is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English. It is a day dedicated to recognizing the importance of writing to every person. Since its inauguration in 2009, more than 30,000 pieces of writing including poems, videos, essays, letters, audio recordings, blog entries, artwork, email, text messages and short stories have been submitted.
