Utica, NY (09/01/2011) - The Mohawk Valley Center for Economic Education at Utica College has been selected by the international Council for Economic Education (CEE) as the recipient of the prestigious 2011 Albert Beekhuis award.

Dedicated to infusing economics into the K-12 curriculum, the CEE works to ensure that students at these levels are empowered with economic and financial literacy.

Utica College’s center focuses on helping local school districts integrate economics by providing training for local teachers, kindergarten through senior high school, in both economic content and pedagogy. The center's staff serves as consultants to school districts on curriculum development, needs assessment, and teaching strategies.

“The programs offered by the center at Utica College, and the commitment to providing the best and most effective economic education to students, teachers and the community at large make Utica College’s Center for Economic Education deserving of this award,” said Nan J. Morrison, president and CEO of the CEE.

The Center for Economic Education at Utica College is directed by Rick Fenner, associate professor of economics at the college and the chair of the economics and finance department.

“Providing students with knowledge of economics and finances is our objective,” said Fenner. “Receiving this award is an honor and means that the center is reaching its goal.”

Dr. Albert Beekhuis was a lifelong believer in the value and importance of economic literacy and a longstanding supporter of the mission of the CEE.

The award recognizes an affiliated center for economic education for outstanding performance in working with teachers and exhibiting excellence in practice, delivery of high quality programs and outreach to its community.

The presentation of the award will take place at the 50th annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference awards dinner on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m. at the Westin Hotel, Chicago, Illinois.
