Utica, NY (07/19/2011) - A number of construction, renovation and maintenance projects are taking place this summer at Utica College.

The renovation of the Gordon Science Center has begun with the gutting and complete renovation of two science laboratories. This project began after commencement and will be finished sometime in August. Further renovations of labs will proceed as funds become available.

A trading room designed for a real world-learning environment for students in the business programs is being built. The room will feature a real-time stock ticker, dual monitor work stations, flat-panel televisions and professional-caliber software that will provide students as well as faculty access to the same market data and analysis available to professional stock traders.

The space in Strebel Student Center that currently holds the Pioneer Café and Subway is undergoing a complete renovation, including a new stage, furniture, wall and window covering, ceiling, nine flat panel televisions, sound system and most notably, the construction of a bar.

The space is designed to be flexible to serve a variety of needs and interests across the college while addressing the need for enhanced programming space. The Pioneer Café and Subway will offer late-night service to all customers but will be partitioned in such a way that the pub will operate for those over 21 years of age. This area will offer a more comfortable dining environment and a multi-purpose social space.

The renovation of the Mary C. Romano Garden located outside Gordon Science Center will make the space more attractive both at the garden level and from above to encourage more use of the space for formal and informational gatherings. Trees and plants are being moved and UC is looking to enhance the lighting to better illuminate the upper and lower levels. New shades will be added that will allow for room-darkening capabilities when needed in the Library Concourse.

The field turf in Gaetano Stadium is being replaced with a third-generation product that will have an extended life. The design will include an image of UC’s mascot, Trax, at the center field and “Pioneers” in the end zones. The lines for the sports will be sewn into the turf, replacing the old practice of painting on the lines each year.

New lighting will be installed throughout the Gannett Library to not only improve the look of the library, but to also decrease the number of lights needed, therefore reducing operating costs. This will qualify the college for rebates for reduced energy usage.

In addition, maintenance and repair work is scheduled for sections of campus road and walkways.

UC officials anticipate these projects will be finished before the start of the fall semester.
