National Experts to Participate in Cybersecurity Summit at UC


Job Fair Later in Day Open to Public, Students, Alumni

Leading experts discuss cyber threats, ways to combat and prevent

Utica, NY (05/23/2011) - Utica College and the Center for Internet Security (CIS) are bringing together several of the nation’s leading experts in cybersecurity to participate in a Cybersecurity Summit on Friday, June 3 at Utica College. The summit, “Best Defense: Joining Forces Against Emerging Cyber Threats,” will examine the current cyber threat landscape and highlight private-public education partnerships contributing to regional, national and global efforts to combat cybercrime and the threat of cyber attack.

Utica College’s three educational partners in the Mohawk Valley – SUNYIT, Mohawk Valley Community College and Herkimer County Community College – will be integral participants in this event.

The summit will feature a keynote presentation by Patrick Gray, senior security strategist for Cisco Systems and an internationally recognized expert in security and cybercrime. Prior to his position at Cisco, Gray served as the director of X-Force Operations at Internet Security Systems Inc. For two decades, he was a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) including serving as a supervisory special agent in intelligence at the FBI headquarters in Washington, where he was responsible for global counterintelligence investigations. While serving in Washington, Gray was seconded to the National Security Agency where he was responsible for an FBI group providing operational support to the intelligence community. Gray continues to work closely with the FBI, other U.S. government agencies, the Department of Homeland Security and the White House.

RoAnn M. Destito, commissioner of the N.Y. State Office of General Services and former assemblywoman, will deliver opening remarks. Also presenting will be Thomas D. Smith, director of the N.Y. State office of Cyber Security, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.

A morning panel discussion will be moderated by William F. Pelgrin, president and CEO of CIS and chair of the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center. The panel will discuss threats the information-sharing partnerships between and among government, public and private security entities and law enforcement. Potential cybersecurity scenarios will be posed throughout the session, enabling audience interaction and discussion on how to detect, prevent, respond to and recover from cyber incidents. Panelists include: Kristin Royster, director of CIP-Cyber Program, National Cyber Security Division, U.S. Department of Homeland Security; Thomas D. Smith, director, N.Y. State Office of Cyber Security, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services; Ronald E. Plesco Jr., CEO, National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance; John Bay, chief scientist, Assured Information Security Inc.; Richard J. Licht, assistant special agent in charge, FBI, Albany, N.Y.; and Dr. Kamal Jabbour, senior scientist for information assurance, Air Force Research Laboratory, Rome, N.Y.

During the afternoon session, Dr. William Banks, professor of law at Syracuse University and director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, will moderate a panel discussion featuring college presidents: Todd S. Hutton, Utica College; Bjong Wolf Yeigh, SUNYIT; Randall J. Van Wagoner, MVCC; and Ann Marie Murray, HCCC. The panel will discuss the role of higher education in cybersecurity education, research and job training.

Immediately following the summit, Mohawk Valley Economic Development Growth Enterprise (EDGE) and the Center for Internet Security, in partnership with the four institutions of higher learning, will host the Central New York Cybersecurity Job Fair.

The summit, which is limited to invited guests, will be held in the Carbone Family Auditorium of the Economic Crime, Justice Studies and Cybersecurity Building at Utica College from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The job fair, which is free and open to students, alumni and the public, will be held in the Library Concourse from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Employers registered include: M.A. Polce Consulting Inc., U.S. Navy, BAE Systems, Assured Information Security Inc., ATC-NY, Center for Internet Security, CACI MTL Systems; N.Y. State Technology Enterprise Corporation and the U.S. Secret Service.
