Utica, NY (04/26/2011) - In 1981, Utica College Professor of English Emeritus Eugene Paul Nassar founded the Ethnic Heritage Studies Center to serve as a venue for research, teaching and public service for the Mohawk Valley’s various cultures. On Saturday, April 30, Utica College will celebrate the center’s 30th anniversary. It will also be officially renamed the Eugene Paul Nassar Ethnic Heritage Studies Center in honor of its founder.

Current director Frank Bergmann, professor of English and German, said that Nassar is still an important part of the center. “He’s been the heart and soul of it ever since even though there have been two directors since he retired,” Bergmann said. “He’s certainly one of Utica’s greats and I’m very glad that both the administration and the trustees saw that.”

The event will be held in the Library Concourse from 2 to 4 p.m. and there will be entertainment, including performances by the Utica Maennerchor and a Caribbean dance group. Refreshments that reflect the rich and diverse heritage of the Mohawk Valley will also be served. There will be publications for sale about local ethnic history, including the center’s main publication, Ethnic Utica, which is a compilation of essays about the various ethnic groups that have settled in Utica over time.

“Because we’re 30 years old, we’re giving a 30 percent discount on all books,” Bergmann said. The event is free and open to the public.
