Utica, NY (04/14/2011) - Utica College seniors will share with the community the products of months of in-depth original research related to the culture and history of the Mohawk Valley and its surrounding vicinities Saturday at the college’s 12th annual History Project Conference.

Under the general umbrella of “Victorian Utica: The Long Century,” students set out to research the various lifestyles and motivations of people living in the Mohawk Valley between 1820 and 1920. Yet the 13 student projects on display span a wide variety of topics. Some examine social change, like the motivations of soldiers from Oneida county who fought in the Civil War, one at the suffrage movement through the eyes of local writers and activists. Several focus on how nativist beliefs affected the running of the New York Mills or how adapting to a changing business model led the Oneida Community founders to adapt their religious practices to fit, while others deal with recreation in the area including Sylvan Beach and the fight to preserve the Adirondacks.

The presentations will begin at 9 a.m. in Hubbard Hall, rooms 207 and 208, and will continue through 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served in room 209 from 12:20 p.m. until 12:40 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
