Utica, NY (03/24/2011) - Utica College will host more than 50 of the area’s most creative young scientists on Saturday, March 26, at the 33rd annual Utica College Regional Science Fair.

The fair is held each year in order to stimulate an active interest in science and engineering while providing an educational experience and public recognition to talented students. Two groups of students, junior high (7-8) and high school (9-12), from schools across Oneida County will compete for the top prize. Their projects, such as “Good for the Environment vs. Good for the Wallet” and “Write Brain/Left Brain,” will be critiqued by a panel of more than 20 judges from various scientific backgrounds.

The participating schools are: Clinton Junior-Senior High School, Donovan Middle School, John F. Kennedy Middle School, New Hartford High School, Perry Junior High School, Poland Junior-Senior High School, Rome Catholic High School, Rome Free Academy, Strough Junior High School, Thomas R. Proctor High School and Whitesboro High School. Students in each age group will enter their projects into one of three categories – physical science, natural science, or math/computer/engineering.

The grand prize winner from the senior level will receive a scholarship of two years at half tuition at Utica College, in addition to a trophy, certificate, and will be eligible to compete at the 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, CA, from May 8-13. The senior level grand prize runner-up will receive a one-year scholarship at half tuition to UC, as well as a trophy and certificate. The junior level grand prize winner will receive a $500 scholarship for one year at UC, and a trophy and certificate. Also, the top three exhibits in each category for their respective level will receive a check for $75, $50, or $25. Participants are also eligible for a number of special awards given by various organizations ranging from National Grid to the U.S. Army.

The public is invited to view the exhibits and speak with the contestants from 1 to 3 p.m. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m.
