Utica, NY (03/24/2011) - Receiving a diagnosis of cancer is devastating. Imagine being a child and hearing that news, and dealing with treatment side effects.March is national Child Life month, and Utica College’s Child Life Society will celebrate by sponsoring a St. Baldrick’s Day event, a national event where people donate money to fund child cancer research and shave their heads in support of children who lose their hair while undergoing chemotherapy.
The group will sponsor a day of events on Friday, March 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Ellen Knower Clarke Lounge, Strebel Student Center. The “shaving” is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m.
The Child Life Society asks that all participants raise or donate a minimum of $20, and they must register on the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s official website. For those whose hair is 10 inches or longer, the Child Life Society will be donating this hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to low income children suffering from long-term hair loss due to a medical diagnosis.
Co-president of the Child Life Society Daniela Reff said that they have been holding a St. Baldrick’s Day event on campus annually since the event became national in 2005 and that the event is very important to childhood cancer research.
“It shows unity with the children who are going through chemotherapy and radiation because some of them who lose their hair never grow it back,” she said. “By shaving your head you’re showing that you support childhood cancer research and you’re not afraid to do something like [shave your head] to support them.”
