Utica, NY (11/05/2010) - Utica College will host several events this week in honor of America’s veterans.

A concert to honor our veterans, featuring the UC concert band under the direction of Michael DiMeo, the newly formed UC concert choir led by David Kolb and members of the Maennerchor and area choirs, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 8 in Strebel Auditorium. The concert will feature patriotic selections, concluding with recognition of veterans in attendance. The college’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadets from Pioneer Detachment, Stalwart Battalion, will be there to pay tribute to those who have served before them and to assist disabled veterans to their seats. Preceding the concert, four cadets will perform the Color Guard ceremony. The concert is free and open to the public.

On Tuesday (Nov. 9), Albert Orbinati, director of graduate online and non-traditional programs and veterans liaison, will discuss "Creating a Veteran-Friendly Campus Community."  The presentation, which begins at 3 p.m. in the Boehlert Conference Center, will discuss specific needs of veteran students on campus. The discussion is part of the ACSS Conversations series.

Several UC ROTC cadets will also help out at the New Hartford Legion on Thursday (Nov. 11) for its Wreath Laying Ceremony. The UC ROTC will contribute a Color Guard to the ceremony.

On Saturday (Nov. 13) the UC ROTC will host a food drive for veterans in need from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Faculty Center Parking Lot at UC. At least one cadet will be performing Army standard pushups at all times, as long as the canned goods continue to be donated. If the food keeps coming, they’ll keep pushing! The event is held in conjunction with UC’s last football game of the season and is also a recruiting effort.

Twice named as one of America’s “Military-Friendly” Schools by G.I. Jobs magazine, Utica College has embraced America’s veterans as students and has worked to provide them with new educational benefits.

For more information about UC’s veteran educational benefits, contact Orbinati at agorbinati@utica.edu.
