Utica, NY (11/02/2010) - A memorial service for Dr. K. Della Ferguson will be held at Utica College on Saturday, Nov. 6. The service, conducted by Rev. Paul J. Drobin, will take place at 1 p.m. in the Library Concourse. All who knew Ferguson are invited to attend.

The former dean of Health Professions and Education, Ferguson passed away peacefully at home Oct. 24, ending a year-long battle with cancer.

A native of Omaha, Neb., Ferguson joined Utica College in 1978 as an assistant professor of psychology. For the next 32 years, she earned the respect of colleagues and students as she championed the rights of women and the elderly. Presented with Utica College's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1990, Ferguson was appointed dean of the School of Health Professions and Education in July of 1999 and held that role until December of 2008.

She also served as director of the Gerontology Institute. In 2009, Ferguson was recognized as a fellow by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, the highest honor that organization can bestow.

Ferguson retired in May of 2010, and was awarded emeritus status by the Utica College board of trustees.

In addition to her professional contributions to Utica College, Ferguson was a pioneer in many respects. She founded the college’s Womyn's Resource Center in 1980, and in 1996 was recognized as the center’s Mentor of the Year. Along with two other Utica College professors, she traveled to Beijing in 1990 to participate in the first Sino-American Conference on Women's Issues. She also served as director for the Mid-Life and Older Women's Center, and arranged for the National Association of Women's Centers to hold their biannual national conference at Utica College in 1995.

Ferguson earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and earned her doctorate from Kansas State University.

Friends, relatives, colleagues and former students are invited to contribute to an online memory book on the college’s website at www.utica.edu/della.
