UC to Host Banned Book Read-In

Utica, NY (10/01/2010) - In celebration of Banned Books Week 2010 (Sept. 25-Oct. 2), Utica College will host a banned books read-in on Thursday, Oct. 7. The event, co-sponsored by the Central New York Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union (CNYCLU), will be held in the Ellen Knower Clarke Lounge, Strebel Student Center, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.Students, faculty, staff and the community are welcome to attend and take part in reading excerpts from their favorite banned books. Books will be available at the event for participants to read and attendees are encouraged to bring their own books as well. Readers can sign up in advance at the School of Business and Justice Studies office in DePerno Hall or by calling 792-3060.
Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than a thousand books have been challenged since 1982 in every state and in hundreds of communities.
The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Founded in 1951 as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with eight chapters and regional offices and nearly 50,000 members across the state. Its mission is to defend and promote the fundamental principles and values embodied in the Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution, and the New York Constitution, including freedom of speech and religion, and the right to privacy, equality and due process of law for all New Yorkers. The Central New York Chapter is based in Syracuse.
