Utica, NY (09/07/2010) - Jan J. DeAmicis, professor of sociology at Utica College, was presented with the Harold T. Clark Jr. Award at the college’s Convocation.

DeAmicis received the award, given annually to recognize and encourage faculty creative accomplishments, particularly for his decades-long research on abolitionism and the operation of the Underground Railroad in Oneida County. Chairing a committee of local citizens, he has helped uncover many sites and people that worked on the Underground Railroad.

“His research has provided a catalyst for the development of two different academic institutes, and led to the creation of websites and a brochure,” Provost Judith Kirkpatrick said of DeAmicis while presenting the award. “Research of this sort epitomizes Utica College’s strengths and values.”

Prior to joining the Utica College faculty in 1977, DeAmicis taught at the University of Melbourne (Australia), Western New England College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He earned a bachelors degree from Dartmouth College. After spending four years in the Air Force, he attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he earned his masters and doctorate degrees.

Adjunct Professor of Sociology Richard M. Stulmaker received the 2010 Continuing Education Distinguished Teaching Award, recognizing excellence in teaching by members of the undergraduate adjunct faculty in the School of Graduate and Extended Studies. Stulmaker earned both bachelors and masters degrees from SUNY Albany, and has been teaching at Utica College since the spring semester of 1989, earning the accolades of students and peers alike.
