Utica, NY (08/26/2010) - Freshmen at Utica College will enjoy a different experience this year. For the first time, freshmen will move in two days earlier than returning students to participate in the “Fall Welcome Weekend.” This will help newcomers transition to the campus easier, and get students to establish relationships with other students, faculty and staff.

First-year students will arrive on Friday, Aug. 27, and activities for freshmen will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Returning and transfer students will arrive on Sunday, Aug. 29.

There will be a Convocation ceremony on Monday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. in the Clark Athletic Center. This year’s speaker is Dr. Sherry Anne Lints, a 1995 graduate of Utica College and local chiropractor.

Following Convocation, there will be a barbeque behind Strebel Student Center for students, faculty and staff.

Patrick Quinn, vice president for Enrollment Management, said UC is expecting 560 freshmen and 175 transfer students. The total number of all undergraduate, graduate, and online students this year is just under 3,500, up from 3,200 for the 2009-2010 school year.

Quinn feels that the Welcome Weekend will be a good experience for the new undergraduates.

“This is all designed to connect them with the College, and help them build relationships and connections on campus,” he said.

New this fall is a master’s degree in Cybersecurity—Intelligence and Forensics, which is the first of its kind in the nation. Due to the demand, additional sections were added to accommodate more students.
