Utica, NY (09/15/2009) - Utica College will celebrate National Constitution Day with a poetry contest on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Ellen Knower Clarke Lounge, Strebel Student Center.Every year the office of Student Activities hosts Constitution Day to celebrate the day the Constitution was first signed. This year Student Activities will host a poetry contest to celebrate the 222nd anniversary of Constitution Day. The winner of the competition will receive a free trip to Washington, D.C. While this event is open to the public, only students are eligible to compete in the contest.
Maureen Murphy, assistant director of student activities, believes that this event nurtures students’ understanding of what it means to be a citizen. “Constitution Day is very important to Utica College because it gives us time to celebrate and reflect our country’s history. As a college community, we try to encourage good citizenship amongst our students and we thought that having a poetry contest would create an open forum for our students to discuss and debate our country’s history, as well as its future.”
