Utica, NY (11/13/2009) - Scientists are constantly trying to create more powerful antigens to fight against sickness, however, it seems as if the pathogens are always one step ahead.
On Monday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m., Peter L. Nara, M.Sc., DVM, Ph.D., the Director for the Center of Advanced Host Defenses, Immunobiotics, and Transitional Comparative Medicine at Iowa State University, will focus on the new research in microbial pathogens and vaccine development, and what may be on the horizon.
His presentation, “Deceptive Imprinting: The Next Major Decade in Systems Immunobiology,” is an in-depth discussion relating to the current developments in antigen delivery, and how these measures are somewhat successful, but do not completely address a growing problem. Nara will also explain why the genetic instability of pathogens, the microbes that cause disease, in the body make it more difficult to create a vaccine capable of killing them.
Nara's lecture is part of the Asa Gray series, and is open to students, faculty, and to the public. All Asa Gray events are held in Donahue Auditorium, located in the Gordon Science Center. For more information, call (315) 792-3028, or visit www.utica.edu/culture.
