Utica, NY (09/14/2009) -     Earning the tagline “the greatest break-up story ever told,” Nina Paley’s "Sita Sings the Blues" is a beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. The ancient tragedy mixed with modern comedy will delight the audience on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Macfarlane Auditorium, DePerno Hall, Utica College, at 7 p.m. Part of the Film@UC series, the showing is free and open to the public.
Released in 2008 in the United States, the film chronicles the events of the ancient epic about young princess Sita and her husband Rama. Once in line to be the ruler of his country, Rama is banished to the forest by his father. His faithful wife Sita accompanies him only to end up kidnapped and seeking rescue by her husband.
The tale of the 14-year banishment and relationship between husband and wife is coupled with the real-life experiences of director Nina Paley. Dealing with her own painful divorce, Paley created this unique animated film as a cathartic release for her emotions. The tragedy of the ancient tale combined with the humor of modern day life makes for an amazing feature.
