Utica, NY (05/07/2009) - Is there a special form of etiquette when eating a jelly bun? Is it even possible to consume one without getting any of that confectioner’s sugar on your face or raspberry jelly on your fingertips?

Six Utica College students will try to determine who can eat a jelly bun in the neatest fashion on Monday, May 11 at 12 noon in the Strebel Dining Commons at UC. Utica College and Holland Farms are teaming up for the contest to inaugurate the bakery’s new presence at the college. The cleanest jelly bun eater will be crowned champion and receive a shirt made of money.

“Many Utica College students are not from the greater Utica area,” said Jeff Weissinger, director of dining services at UC. “We want to give them a chance to taste some of Utica’s favorite dishes -- the jelly buns, for instance. This unique contest will kick off Holland Farms’ new partnership in UC’s dining menu.” Holland Farms will begin providing pastries for the UC Dining Hall and for catering occasions, Weissinger said.

Holland Farms, a local bakery and deli located in Yorkville, has garnered a reputation for not only its jelly buns, but also its coffee and half-moon cookies. Ramon Zayas, a store employee, was named in the Guinness Book of World Record in 1993 for the largest jelly bun doughnut, some 16 feet in diameter, weighing over 3,700 pounds! During “jelly bun month” this past February, more than 50,000 customers purchased the treat.

The event, Weissinger said, also gives students a chance to have some fun during final exam week.
